1. New Cast List for the BioShock Movie (According to Me)

Jack - Simon Pegg; he looks quite different from the Jack in the game, but why deny this possibly-amazing movie one of the best nerd-actors known to man? Simon Pegg is the best kind of leading man, one we can all easily get behind. He can do comedy and drama well, and can do an American accent. He’s the perfect choice for the guy who leads us through Rapture.

Andrew Ryan - Geoffrey Rush; although he’s not been in a “nerdy film” before, I think he’d fit in quite nicely as the ruler of Rapture. He’s great as historical figures and men in power, yet also men who are maniacal and mentally unstable. I think he’d be the only choice for Andrew Ryan.

Atlas - Ewan McGregor or Colin Farrell; I feel they are both strong choices and fit well into the “born-leader” role, although Atlas himself would say otherwise. You’d want the leader of a revolution to be intimidating yet likable. Strong! Colin Farrell is more of a “if-we-can’t-get-Ewan” pick, but that’s not to say he isn’t a strong, likable actor. He can use a gun and fight, and he’s got his share of notable acting chops. They’re both good choices.

Dr. Brigid Tenenbaum - Scarlett Johansson; the obvious choice, I think, would be Carla Gugino because she’s always in movies adapted from comics. She’s like the go-to actress for a role like this. But she over-does it. I think a better choice would be Scarlett Johansson. She can act in dramatic roles well, she can pull off a foreign accent, and she’s not the obvious choice. This is very different from the roles she’s done before, yet she could totally fit!

Little Sister - Chloë Grace Moretz; this girl is tearing up the movie world right now. She has both blockbuster and indie hits under her belt, and this movie could be a great next step. Hit Girl wouldn’t be the only Little Sister in Rapture, but she’d be the one we all cared about most.

Those are my 5 main picks, and I think arguably the 5 characters that would be the selling point for the film.

Album Review: Attack Attack!’s “This Means War”

Attack Attack!, from the start of their career, were known for trying to mix metalcore and techno/electronica. But they didn’t so much mix it as have two separate musical sections in the same song. And it was not fun to listen to. Most of the flack came from their music video for Stick Stickly which is not only a really bad song but a REALLY bad video. The screaming is weak, the electronica is just…. ugh, and the whole song just doesn’t work.

I even gave their self-titled a chance, but found myself too distracted by the stark differences in styles, and the strange amalgamation of trying to mix dark lyrics with dancey love lyrics. It did not work, though there were a few songs that stood out as being listenable at best. One song in particular, AC-130, stood out because it was straight metalcore/hardcore with no electronica whatsoever. Which brings up an interesting fact: the heavier parts of their songs are indeed mosh-worthy (sometimes). But this is overlooked by the fact that they’re… well, Attack Attack!.

When I first learned of their newest single last month, called The Motivation, I was really surprised. It was many things that were not bad. They were able to mix the electronica and metalcore well by taking a more subtle approach rather than have, say, a dance breakdown. Instead of auto-tuning the shit out of the clean vocals, they are untouched and different with more of a modern rock sound. The opening is a soft yet dark piano piece with string accompaniment. Even the breakdown is different than just CHUG CHUG CHUG. Which lead me to actually have some expectation for their new album, “This Means War.”

The Motivation is the 6th track on “This Means War,” and, unfortunately, everything up to that point doesn’t really stand out. Most of the the down-tuned riffs sound the same, and even the first track, The Revolution, seems to be a carbon copy. The songs have little-to-no differentiation. It’s very unfortunate, because the second half is where Attack Attack!’s new creativity begins to shine through. Track 5, The Abduction, is really where the album takes an unexpected turn, with a driving force unseen in previous tracks. While still keeping in the occasional metalcore breakdown parts, it mixes well, and it has no clean vocals either. It’s just different.

Really, there’s songs the album could do without. Tracks 5, 6, 9, and 10 are really the only 4 that show progression from what Attack Attack! used to be, while keeping the best parts of what they used to be (few and far between, but they are there). The album does have notable parts, but they unfortunately tend to not be on the same song. And, the biggest detriment to the album is that, while it is a concept album, the songs seem to not work together as well. As stated before, most seem to be the same thing over and over again.

I have to say that I was not impressed by this album. It’s not that memorable as a whole. However, there are tracks that have strength and do stand out amongst the others. While I think the album is forgettable, it is a step in a good direction. They’ve gotten a handle on what to do about the electronica madness, and they were able to put out a few songs that show a little something I wasn’t expecting. From what I’ve read, fans are split, but so are the haters. When you can change someone’s mind for the better, or at least for the “not as bad,” then I think you’ve done something.

Attack Attack! are not bad. They’re not that good, either (when considering their whole body of work), but maybe, one day, they’ll really surprise us.

  3. I’ve had a fair amount of posts on this blog talking about the band Attack Attack! (their style of music, their lyrics, and their videos, etc.) and how much I dislike them. While I was in San Jose for New Year’s and a few days, a friend of mine and fellow hardcore lover asked me about them. It blew me away at first, because he is a hardcore hardcore fan, and a band like Attack Attack! would seem, to me, not to fit in with the bands he listens to. We kinda got in-depth in our discussion, which is kinda cool seeing as how we were talking about Attack Attack!.

He turned on Pandora and found a song of theirs he thought I would like, and, strangely enough, I did. It was called “AC-130”. It’s much different from (at that point) much of their catalog as it is a straight hardcore/metalcore song, and it basically sounds like 4 different breakdowns. Later, I confessed to having listened to their song “Smokahontas” because I liked the electronica part.

So I downloaded their most recent album and found which songs I most accepted and deleted the rest. My Attack Attack! acceptance level went from 1 to 7 songs.

I found out they have a new album coming out, and, out of curiosity, checked out the samples on Amazon. Was very surprised to hear stuff I didn’t dislike at all. All the songs seem to have a more subtle use of electronic influences, and the clean vocalist is different from what I’ve heard too. And, the metalcore was good too! The samples were only 30 seconds each, but each song sounded good enough as to where I’d at least give the full album a listen.

Could I see them now as I see The Devil Wears Prada? It seems that Attack Attack! aren’t that sucky of a band anymore. If they don’t fiddle around like crabs on a stage, I might stop using the word “sucky,” too.

  4. I was really impressed with all the new music I listened to this year, especially all the new releases from pop punk bands. It seemed like this year was a major comeback for all these bands that I loved and listened to in high school, as well as new bands. blink-182, New Found Glory, Sum 41, and Yellowcard were some of the bigger pop punk bands I was stoked to hear new music from. And it seems there’s so many new and powerful pop punk acts coming along, I’m excited for them all! Four Year Strong’s new release, from what I’ve heard so far, is a step in a different direction, but shows their music is growing. The Swellers are a smaller pop punk band that is fast and fun and so true. We Are the Union is a pop punk/ska band I’ve been loving for a while, and they released a new EP this year. Of course, I have to mention The Wonder Years, who are probably gonna be at the forefront of the genre really soon.

All these bands and so much more to come. I can’t wait to listen to it all.

  5. A few months ago, I was hanging out after a comedy show at Metldown Comics. Everyone went to this place Rainforest Pizza, which was also a hookah bar. Understand that, if you can.

Anyway, I was talking to a friend when I was tapped on the back and asked if I went to Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre a lot. I had never met the guy who asked, and so I thought maybe this was my chance to make a new friend or something. I said yes, and he proceeded to tell me the following: A few weeks prior, we had been in line for the bathroom at UCB, and he asked me if he could go ahead of me. I had said yes, but then just gone into the bathroom next anyway.

I was a bit shocked, both because I didn’t remember this at all and because I would never do something so completely rude and dickish on purpose. That’s what he said, too. He said it was really rude and that it was something he would never forget. Like I said, I didn’t remember this at all, and I stopped to think but told him I couldn’t remember this happening. I apologized for it more than once, and I thanked him for telling me.

Thinking about it now, I believe I do remember this incident. Loud music plays at the end of UCB shows, and that’s when I and this other dude were in line for the bathroom. he tapped me on the shoulder, and I remember him saying something. Unfortunately, I couldn’t hear him. Instead of asking him to say it again, I did this really dumb thing and I just nodded like I knew what he was talking about. To be honest, I thought maybe he was complimenting the sweater I was wearing, because I thought he pointed at it. He was obviously pointing to the bathroom. I think people tend to just nod like they understand what someone is saying when really it’s just to prevent awkwardness.

I really did thank the guy for telling me. I so rarely have someone just talk to me and tell me something bluntly, especially when they have feelings about something I have done or said. It was also nice that he didn’t try to start a fight with me. He just wanted to let me know that I was wrong.

So, person from Rainforest Pizza, if you ever read this, still know that I’m extremely sorry for my rude behavior. I made a mistake and I sucked because of it. I hope you can forgive me.

  6. The reason Facebook is a friend-only system is for privacy. Sometimes, you don’t want people to see your personal information. That’s why friends are the only ones who can see it.

Now, Facebook has taken that away with this new “subscribers” thing. Facebook is not Tumblr. We don’t post interesting things that we really want other people to see anyway because they’re not important or funny. It’s usually locations or meaningless status updates. My Facebook is linked to Twitter and Tumblr because I post much more interesting stuff on those sites.

I swear, if Facebook makes another godawful change like this, I’m leaving. I’m also gonna email them dozens of times and annoy the hell out of them so I can get my account deleted permanently. It’s becoming a pest.

Alright, a lot of my friends know I’m not a The Devil Wears Prada fan. I’ve heard songs from their past albums, and I was mostly turned off by the heavy electronic influence. It on the whole was just too electronic and too “clean”, I guess. For a metalcore band, anyway.

I have begun listening to this, the Zombie EP, out of curiosity. I do listen to metal and metalcore, and I had read reviews and information about this album saying that it was extremely heavy and fast and that, basically, The Devil Wears Prada grew up. To compare, I checked the reviews of previous albums and of albums from other currently popular metalcore bands (Attack Attack!,… well, actually, that was about it. I just wanted to see what someone thought of listening to a full album of theirs).

I am liking this EP. It is definitely a step above previous albums and a step in a better direction. I will no longer wear my The Devil Wears Prada shirt ironically.

  8. I’m not gonna repost the pictures of Rihanna post-beating by Chris Brown right now, because dammit people are gonna be sleeping soon. But I will say I completely agree with what most are saying, and that Chris Brown is still a danger to women and just because he’s a popular music artist does not mean he didn’t beat a woman so bad she had to go to a hospital.

  9. oddfuture:

WE DID IT. OFWGKTA. WE WAS BROKE NOBODIES LAST YEAR. SHIT, WE STILL ARE NOBODIES, BUT TOOK THAT SHINY NIGGA HOME THO.

Odd Future made their television debut 6 MONTHS AGO. Half a goddamn year. And now this. Congrats, Tyler.

That being said, let’s not forget to point out that MTV is basically a giant pile of shit. The bands that were nominated for “Best Rock Video” were Foo Fighters and 4 bands that don’t play rock. It’s awesome that things like Tyler the Creator winning can happen, but hip hop is not the only kind of music out there. Less than half the awards were won by non-hip hop artists, and 4 of the 12 performances were hip hop or R&B.

The VMAs represented a total of maybe 4 music genres last night, most of which intertwine with each other at this point (pop, hip hop, R&B). It’s extremely unfair to all the other genres out there to cast them out. Just because one type of music is popular doesn’t mean all others should be ignored.

I know I’m yelling at a brick wall here. There’s a very small chance MTV will change based just on my opinion. But whatever, it’s horrible.

One of my favorite albums in high school. I just listened to it again yesterday, and it’s still one of the best albums ever.

I just found out that The Starting Line reunited and are writing new music, and I couldn’t be more ecstatic! I only saw them live once, though I wish I had seen them many more times. They were opening for Sum 41, I want to say in 2002 or 2003. I was super excited to see them because like earlier that week, I had discovered The Starting Line on PureVolume. I had “Best Of Me” stuck in my head, I kept listening to it. They were great, and all throughout their set, maybe 4 other people and I kept shouting out “Best Of Me! Best Of Me!” The whole band was laughing and it was a super fun set, “Best Of Me” was their last song. I bought a Starting Line wristband.

*sigh* I wish I still had that ticket.

  11. So, for SOME REASON, I was reading the lyrics to that Attack Attack! song “Sitck Stickly”…

You know, the one with the horrible music video. Because I’m so interested in things that are bad, I actually know a fair amount about Attack Attack! and their music. I don’t know why I had to know it, I just do.

Anyway, I was reading the lyrics and something struck me: “Stick Stickly” is a uber-religious song. This is odd, not only because Attack Attack! chooses metalcore/electro to express themselves, but also because they have gone on record saying that they are not a Christian band. For example, these lyrics are in one of the breakdowns:

We live for what He’s worth,
and thats more than youll know.
He died for what He loved,
and what he loved was you.

I’ve found a lot of metalcore bands are Christian, and some members of Attack Attack! are too. But saying that your band is not Christian and then having a song like that is kinda weird. I don’t know, kinda makes me respect them even less, being hypocritcial like that.

No offense to fans, because I know they have them. They have enough to be on the main stage at Warped Tour this summer. And their shirts are pretty rad. It’s just I feel if a band went out of their way to not to say that they wouldn’t single themselves out and try to appeal to a wider audience, they wouldn’t sing songs about Him.

  12. Alright, I just wanted to post this because hey, I have opinions about music and stuff.

This is “Breathing” by Yellowcard. There are a couple of reasons why this is an amazing song, and I shall outline them.

    1. The simple palm-muted intro before the music blasts in. Then the music blasts in. It is quite an epic beginning.

    2. I particularly like the violin in this song a lot, it goes so well with the fast nature of it.

    3. The guitar/violin harmonies before the first verse. They are amazing.

    4. Ryan Key has able to take the simple concept of regretting a break up and sing so well about it. I love the lyrics of this song.

    5. At 2:11, there is a quiet breakdown. It kinda doesn’t fit, but I like that it immediately gets louder right after at 2:26. It’s like the beginning happens again.

    6. The final verse has some of my favorite lyrics ever written, no question. And then, the music kicks in again for the final chorus. That’s three epic “beginnings”!

The grouping of heart-filled lyrics and fast, strong music make the song. I hope you guys like it as much as me!

  13. I’m in Jamaica!

This is quite awesome. We arrived in Jamaica around 11:30 AM (9:30 AM California time), and then got out of the airport and through customs by 12:30. We then took a 2 HOUR CAR RIDE to the place we are staying. The roads in Jamaica are very pothole-y and the drivers drive both fast yet slow down to watch out for them. Crazy. Like a neverending roller coaster ride. Anyway, we’re at our villa now, and we are enjoying everything and it’s awesome! It’s sunny yet breezy, we have a great view and the beach is right there. Pictures shall be uploaded at the end of this trip!

  14. In my dream that I just now woke from, I was Patrick Bateman’s assistant (American Psycho, Christian Bale). Well, before that, I was just Patrick’s POV as he was killing someone in this house full of corpses. I assume he was imagining the other corpses. So, I jumped from his POV to my own at some point, and I was hiding from him in this empty room of the house. I think I was there until morning, because I was scared and didn’t wanna leave. Then my buddy Ben came over and something happened then Patrick came. He wasn’t supposed to think I was there, so I quickly hid then reappeared and said good morning and that I was gonna grab breakfast with Ben. Patrick said okay, and then Ben and I had breakfast. He paid me for something.

Then my dream suddenly switched to Tosh.0, and Daniel was making fun of Elle Fanning in Super 8. Then it showed him interviewing Dakota Fanning sitting next to a pool. A mother (presumably Dakota and Elle’s) helped a much younger version of Elle out of the pool. Dakota said, referring to her sister, “Is the whore done yet?” It’s a comedy show, so they were just making fun of Elle and sisters hate each other, which fueled the comedy fire, I guess.

That’s all I remember before I woke up.

Dear @joepending and the rest of Patent Pending,

I’m seriously gonna cry. I am so happy today. I’ve only known Patent Pending for a few years, but it has felt so much longer because of what their music has done for me. I would not be even close to the person I am today if it wasn’t for Patent Pending. You guys have made such an impact on my life and my sense of humor and my style and basically me. To have given my own money and had it used on an actual album by one of my favorite bands is amazing. You guys are amazing, and this album will be on repeat for the next forever. Love you guys!

Sincerely,
Peter
